In Democracy in America Alexis de Tocqueville said, “Everybody feels the evil, but no one has courage or energy enough to seek the cure.” Today Patrick Brown resigned as Ontario PC Leader because of sexual misconduct allegations and federal MP Kent Hehr resigned from cabinet over allegations of sexual harassment.
Everyone knows such actions are wrong, but who has the courage to philosophically tackle the underlying problems that lead to them? After all, Tocqueville also noted, “Society is endangered not by the great profligacy of a few, but by the laxity of morals amongst all.”
One person who had “the courage and energy to seek the cure” was Dietrich von Hildebrand who, rather than meditating on lowest common denominators in ethical questions, opted to meditate instead on truly good men and women.
