This evening I watched the livestream of the “Is There Meaning to Life?” panel event hosted by Wycliffe College at the University of Toronto.
At the end of two hours of discussion between the three panelists, Jordan Peterson summed up with these words he most wants to leave with his audiences:
Being is suffering
tainted by malevolence
And so what’s the meaning? There’s pain to alleviate
There’s chaos to confront
There’s order to establish and revivify
and there’s evil to constrain
not least in our own hearts
and that’s meaning enough for everyone.
It’s remarkable how keenly people are listening to him distill and affirm fundamental, sometimes difficult, and usually deeply humanizing truths.
Fr. Raymond de Souza delivered a phenomenal address at Rise Up this year that touches on some of the same themes. It’s titled, “The Battlefield of Our Hearts”. To read it, click here.
